Burma gatecrashes ASEAN’s Anniversary: Reflection and Renewal

Burma looks set to catalyse change with ASEAN, an organisation which has over the last decade adhered to the ASEAN way in its relations with countries such as Burma itself. However after this was exposed as being institutionally deficient, the organisation responded by finalising the ASEAN Charter. The article argues that engagement with Burma is essential to the successful ratification of the charter, the establishment of an economic and social bloc and the gestation of ideas necessary for ASEAN's continued relevance.
