The assasination of Benazir Bhutto on 27 December 2007 was followed by a virtual breakdown in law and order inside Pakistan. However, soon after, the violence subsided and attention turned to larger strategic issues, including the future direction of Pakistan and the prospects of democracy. Prior to her death, Bhutto provided the illusion of democracy and was a vital ally to the US. In the post-Bhutto phase the US can only hope that the PPP win the election, and by accepting, Musharraf bolsters his democratic credentials and reassures US Congress.
