Security Council authorisation for Darfur peacekeeping force

1 Aug 2007

Described by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon as an 'historic and unprecedented resolution', the Security Council yesterday authorized a hybrid peacekeeping mission for the Darfur region of Sudan that will combine United Nations and African Union forces.

The operation will be known as UNAMID, and will become the largest peacekeeping force in the world and incorporate the current African Union mission, AMIS. A Chapter VII mandate has been given to ensure implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement between the Sudanese government and Darfuri rebels, as well as protect civilians, its own personnel, and aid workers.
