Former senior Whitehall officials join RUSI

The former Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service and the former head of the UK Government's Stabilisation Unit are named fellows at the Royal United Services Institute.

Sir John ScarlettSir John Scarlett KCMG OBE has been named a Senior Associate Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute. From August 2004-2009 he was Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, his final post after thirty-eight years of government service. His full biography can be found here.

Welcoming him to RUSI, Director Professor Michael Clarke said: "RUSI will benefit enormously in having Sir John as a Senior Associate Fellow. His experience of world affairs and of policy-making for UK national security is unrivalled and we look forward keenly to his involvement in many areas of our research work. He will offer even greater insight and perspective to what we do. We are delighted to announce that he is a Senior Associate Fellow."

Sir John Scarlett said: "I am very pleased to be associated with RUSI and I am sure I will find the experience stimulating."

 

Richard TeutenRUSI is also happy to announce the secondment as Senior Visiting Fellow of Richard Teuten, who was most recently the Head of the UK Government's Stabilisation Unit. He led the unit (formerly the Post-Conflict Reconstruction Unit) from April 2006 until January 2010 with responsibility for deploying civilians to work in hostile environments (with a focus on Afghanistan and Iraq), supporting cross-government planning and feeding lessons into doctrine, policy, and training.

At RUSI Richard Teuten will be analysing the international community's role in promoting stability in countries affected by violent conflict and in conflict prevention. His focus is on cross-government planning, the respective roles of civilians and military in stabilisation, and developing and deploying civilian capability to work in hostile environments.
