About the event:
A presentation by Nick Gurr, Director Media and Communication, Ministry of Defence, UK.
In his presentation, Nick Gurr will focus on strategic communications and how it is applied in the Ministry of Defence (MoD). He will draw on his experience of defence communications that began with Operation Desert Fox in 1998 and has continued through Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. Nick Gurr will discuss what strategic communications means in an organisation like MoD, how it has evolved and the challenges to its successful execution both in MoD and across government. He will offer case examples on what has worked well, what has not and why.
Nick Gurr joined the civil service in 1982 and MoD a year later. He spent his career until 1998 in various policy posts at the heart of the MoD but since 1998 has worked mainly in communications: first as Head of Communication Planning from 1999-2002, including a spell as Acting Head of News; from 2006 as Director of Communication Planning and since 2007 as Director General (later Director) Media and Communication – the most senior communication position in defence. In addition to his responsibilities for defence communications output, he is head of profession for all defence communicators.
Refreshments will be served from 1515.
