(Presentations can be found on the Additional Information tab) Globally, ICT is responsible for around 2% carbon dioxide emissions. Surprisingly, this is similar to the aviation industry. Initiatives such as the government's Greening ICT Strategy aim to reduce the impact of IT and look at ways in which it can be used in a more sustainable manner. However, IT can also be used to manage information and is being used very effectively on estates to identify areas where energy is wasted and also in logistics to optimise supply chains and manage the vehicle fleet. Housing is typically responsible for around 50% CO2 emissions and road transport for around 20-25% so a small investment in IT could help deliver a more sustainable solution. This workshop will look at UK and EU initiatives to optimise the use of IT. It will also examine ways in which ICT could help the Ministry of Defence achieve Government SOGE targets on the Defence Estate and reduce fuel consumption in theatre.
