About the event
This annual conference, jointly organised by the United Nations Association Westminster Branch and RUSI has established itself as one of the UK's most authoritative reviews of UN peacekeeping activities.
The programme will comprise a morning session followed by the wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Afghanistan and elsewhere, the United Nations, ISAF or other mandated authority must assume a combination of roles which are fundamentally incompatible. This conference will examine the perennial question of how to be a successful peacekeeper, humanitarian provider and nation builder.
Featured speakers and topics include:
9th Folke Bernadotte Lecture
Soldier, Peacebuilder and Aid Giver; Can the UN be All?
Chairman: Sir Paul Lever KCMG, Vice-President, RUSI
Lecture by: Rt Hon Baroness Amos, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief, United Nations
The United Nations is expected by many to provide solutions to the most intractable of problems. The most difficult of these is the continuing challenge to establish a single management structure which covers its principal roles; peacekeeping, nation-building and humanitarian assistance.
How to Overcome the Challenges Facing UN Integration
Chairman: Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Former Secretary of State for International Development, UK
Speaker: Victoria Metcalfe, Humanitarian Policy Group, Overseas Development Institute
The speaker, a co-author of the Report UN Integration and Humanitarian Space, will use case studies from Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia to introduce proposed structures which set out to address traditional obstacles to successful integration.
Members of the diplomatic community and other organisations will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph at 1200 in remembrance of those from the 120 participating nations who have been killed whilst serving as UN peacekeepers.
The conference fee of £15, with a special rate of £6 for students, includes related documents and morning refreshments.
