This conference was RUSI’s first public opportunity to discuss the outcome of NATO’s Lisbon Summit and the adoption of the new Strategic Concept, which entails the development of a missile defence capability as a core element of Alliance collective defence.

A major highlight in the missile defence calendar, this international conference featured authoritative presentations from senior military representatives, policy makers, industry and analysts.

With the objective of addressing the key issues, policies and capabilities surrounding missile defence in Europe, the conference assessed and updated how various systems such as the Active Layered Theatre Ballistic Missile Defence (ALTBMD) and the US Phased Adaptive Approach (PAA) can contribute to this architecture.

In particular, the conference considered the political, budgetary, industry and technological debates, threat assessments and capabilities emanating in particular from Iran and North Korea. The clarificatory steps for proposed NATO-Russia cooperation was also discussed.

Following the UK Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR), the conference examined an appropriate UK contribution within a European missile defence architecture.
