Members’ Lecture – Georgia: Current Security Challenges

A lecture by His Excellency Mr Giorgi Badridze, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Over a year ago, Russian tanks rolled across Georgian territory in scenes reminiscent of the worst of the Cold War. Twenty percent of Georgia is still occupied by Russian forces and there is no indication they will be pulling out soon. Agreements Russia made with the international community have not been kept and Russia is doing everything it can to keep out monitors and observers. Thousands have been displaced from their homes and the security environment remains tense and fragile.

The situation in Georgia poses serious questions for the West, and these were set out by Ambassador Badridze. In his address, he gave his perspective on recent developments, explained how Georgia has responded to the occupation and set out his thoughts on how a political solution can be found to restore stability to the Caucasus.

His Excellency Mr Giorgi Badridze was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the United Kingdom and Ireland on 3 June 2009. He joined the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs after graduating in 1992. He has held a number of senior appointments including Head of Western European Department (1996 to 1999); Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Georgian Embassy in Ankara, Turkey (1999 to 2002); Director General of the Americas; and Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Georgian Embassy to the UK and Ireland (2007).
