Whitehall Dialogue: Maritime Security – A Global Perspective

12:45, 30 Jun 2008
RUSI, Whitehall, London, SW1A 2ET

About the event:

Christopher Trelawny, Head of the Maritime Security Section, International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will lead a Whitehall Dialogue Meeting on 'Maritime Security – A Global Perspective'.

Since the 1980s, the IMO has developed international treaties, guidelines and recommendations on measures to prevent unlawful acts against passengers and crew on board ships. Following the events of 9/11, the IMO introduced, in December 2002, Special Measures to enhance maritime security which became mandatory on 1 July 2004, and apply to ships engaged on international voyages and the port facilities that serve them. These have been primarily designed to counter acts of terrorism and enable ships and port facilities to co-operate to detect and deter acts which threaten security in the maritime transport sector. In addition, in October 2005, the 1988 international treaties on the 'Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against Maritime Navigation' and against the 'Safety of Fixed Platforms on the Continental Shelf' were updated to reflect developments within the United Nations system.

RUSImotifChristopher Trelawny will provide an update on the regulations, guidance and IMO-led initiatives for a range of civil maritime security related issues, including piracy and armed robbery against ships. He will focus on multi-disciplinary, multi-agency and international solutions and will also outline considerations for enhanced civil-military cooperation with respect to maritime counter-terrorism and marine situational awareness.

A sandwich lunch will be available from 1215.
