About the event:

Sir Martin Gilbert

Sir Martin Gilbert will discuss British policy from the Balfour Declaration in 1917 to the establishment of the Palestine Mandate in 1922. He will then examine the workings of the Mandate and the evolution of the conflict between the Jewish and Arab inhabitants of Palestine from the First World War to the end of the Mandate in 1948.

Sir Martin Gilbert CBE, official biographer of Winston Churchill, has written extensively on the history of Palestine and Israel. Volume Four of his Churchill biography, World in Torment, 1917-1922, deals in detail with the transformation in Palestine from British military rule to the Mandate. He is the author of The Routledge Atlas of the Arab-Israel Conflict, now in its ninth edition, taking the story up to Annapolis and beyond. He is a Trustee of the Portland Trust, which works on the West Bank to help Palestinian businessmen and farmers, and to create affordable housing in a rural environment outside the main Palestinian towns. His book, A History of Israel, has just been re-issued in a new edition, spanning 1897 to 2008. For more information please visit

The lecture will be chaired by Gill Bennett OBE, Associate Fellow, RUSI, and formerly Chief Historian, The Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
