Professor Mary Beard will address the implications of the Roman triumph (as a celebration of imperialism and military might) and the questions it raises about military power and “victory” in the modern age. While the Romans were the greatest conquerors the world had known, the ambivalences of victory (the idea of "mission accomplished") and uncertainties about the heroism of the enemy and how to represent it, prompted them to question as well as celebrate military glory.
Professor Mary Beard is Professor of Classics, University of Cambridge. She is a Fellow of Newnham College and Classics editor of the Times Literary Supplement. Her most recent books are The Roman Triumph (Harvard UP, 2007); The Colosseum (with K Hopkins) (Profile/Harvard UP 2004); and The Parthenon (Profile/Harvard UP, 2002).
