UK Military Operations in Afghanistan:
Supporting a Coherent Whole of Government Approach”.
Monday 8 June 2009, 1100 - 1220
Royal United Services Institute, Whitehall, London SW1A 2ET
Recent weeks have seen a number of events that will directly affect the role and strategy of the British military contingent in Helmand:
• The deployment of 3600 US Marines to the province
• An extra 700 British troops for the duration of the Afghan Presidential Election
• Lieutenant General Stanley McChrystal’s appointment as the new ISAF Commander
• The Pakistani Army’s anti-Taliban campaign in the Swat Valley
Underpinning these deployments are the recently articulated US and UK strategies for Afghanistan, promoting an integrated whole of government approach and a dual Afghanistan-Pakistan policy. Lieutenant General Wall and Adam Thomson will present the FCO and MoD’s perspectives and jointly discuss the implications for current and future operations in Afghanistan.
This event is open to all.
An optional sandwich lunch will be served after the lecture from 1220 at a cost of £10, payable in advance. No lunch registrations will be accepted on the day.
