POSTPONED
Nowhere else on earth has the prospect of water wars been more often or more earnestly asserted than in South Asia, where two of the world’s greatest river systems – the Indus and the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) – crisscross the international boundaries of several of the world’s largest and most densely-populated countries, including India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
While the dominant powers in these catchment areas judge water security to be a matter of supreme national importance, their neighbours complain of reticence towards more equitable approaches to water sharing. This conference will aim to explore the potential for inter-state conflict over water resources in South Asia and to provide recommendations for confidence building measures to ensure regional water security.
This is a joint Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and Public Policy Research Organisation (PPRO) event.
