The conflict in Darfur continues unabated. As the UN Security Council and UNAMID attempt to resolve the impasse, the viewpoints of renowned local leaders and mediators, such as Suleiman Jamous, are vital.
Suleiman Jamous is one of the most knowledgeable and influential people on the Darfur crisis. He is the Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sudan Liberation Army – Unity (SLA – Unity) and has won international attention for his role as both a humanitarian activist and as an “insider” in the ongoing conflicts in Darfur. He is also one of Sudan’s most famous former political prisoners.
Mr Jamous will discuss the history and current situation in Darfur, looking at both the humanitarian and conflict aspects. He will provide an insider’s perspective on the Darfur conflicts and the relationship with Khartoum; there will also be insights on how the Darfuri view the United Nations Mission to Sudan (UNMIS) in general, and the joint United Nations – African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) operation in particular. This will be a rare opportunity to hear and engage with one of the key actors in Darfur.
Also on the panel will be His Excellency Omer Siddig, Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan. Mr Siddig will present his perspectives on the Darfur crisis and conflict, giving insights on how the Sudan government views the situation in Darfur, with particular reference to the local insurgencies, the humanitarian situation, and international intervention. He will also discuss the impact of the Darfur crisis on the general security situation in Sudan.
A questions-and-answer session will follow the presentation.
This event is open to the public, but places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The participation of NGOs dealing with Sudan is particularly encouraged.
