I announced at the JSCSC on 24 September that all members of the current Advanced and Intermediate Command and Staff Course were welcome to become free members of RUSI for a year if they join the institute by completing a direct debit form with their application.

I would be delighted to welcome you to this scheme. Join us by direct debit, get all the benefits of membership – the RUSI Journal, RUSI Defence Systems, personal briefings, rights to attend meetings and lectures, access to the library in Whitehall or by visiting the extensive online catalogue, plus the member-only parts of the website – free for the first year and you are still completely at liberty to cancel your direct debit at any time. We are confident that at the end of the year you will want to continue your RUSI membership on a paying basis to maintain all the advantages it will have given you.

I am also anxious that members of the ACSC and ICSC take up this offer for a quite reciprocal reason. RUSI wants the active input of officers – UK and other nationalities – at your levels of command as we re-orientate our research programmes to meet the new challenges of understanding contemporary security issues. We have launched a British Security Policy initiative under the direction of Professor Malcolm Chalmers, formerly Special Adviser to the last two Foreign Secretaries. We have also created an Operational Studies Programme that will analyse current operations and future scenarios. Our three research departments analyse International Security, Military Sciences, and Homeland Security and Resilience. We would welcome your input and involvement in all of these areas.
