Andrew Garfield

Position: Director RUSI US

Andrew Garfield served both as a British military and a senior civilian intelligence officer, finishing his government service in 2001 as a policy adviser in the UK Ministry of Defense. He has vast and extensive Information Operations (IO) and Psychological Operations (PSYOP) experience, which includes performing IO related research and field operations for the Department of Defense (DoD) in the United States.

Mr. Garfield lectures extensively on IO and PSYOP in the UK and the US, including at the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Naval Postgraduate School, as part of a cultural education program for U.S. Army commanders and staffs deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan and for the Fourth Psychological Operations Group.

He has also undertaken extensive research and lectured on counter insurgency and counter terrorism for the DoD, and for the US and UK Intelligence Communities.  After leaving UK Government service, Mr. Garfield served for two years as Deputy Director of The International Policy Institute at King's College, London and as the European Director of a US-based terrorism think tank.

Having emigrated to the United States in 2004, Mr. Garfield subsequently served as Senior Operations Director for a successful US Strategic Communications company, supporting US Government clients including in Iraq.  He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and has recently started a Maryland-based strategic communications consultancy, Glevum Associates which supports the U.S. Army and Air Force in both Iraq and Afghanistan.  In March 2008 he was appointed as the U.S. Director of the Royal United Services Institute.
