About RUSI

RUSI was founded in 1831 at the initiative of the Duke of Wellington. Its original mission was to study naval and military science, what Clausewitz called the ‘art of war’.

It still does so: developments in military doctrine, defence management and defence procurement remain central elements in the Institute's work. But in recent years RUSI has broadened its remit to include all issues of defence and security, including terrorism and the ideologies which foster it and the challenges which we face from other man-made or man-assisted threats and from natural disasters.

RUSI is a unique institution; it is the oldest surviving united services institute in the world. It embodies nearly two centuries of forward thinking, free discussion and careful reflection on defence and security matters.

It can achieve this thanks to its long-standing base in London's Whitehall and also through regional offices in the Gulf and the United States.

RUSI is a British institution, but operates with an international perspective. It has amassed over the years an unequalled expertise in its field and an outstanding reputation for quality and objectivity. RUSI's heritage and reputation, its location close to the Ministry of Defence and other ministries in Whitehall and its range of contacts with key opinion formers both inside and outside government, gives unique insight and authority.

The Institute has four main activities:

Research

Research IconWe undertake rigorous, expert and objective analysis of current trends and developments, both for the Institute's own publications and events and commissioned privately for clients.

Events

Events IconWe offer a programme of conferences, seminars, workshops and talks by leading experts providing insight to and fostering debate among practitioners, policy makers and analysts.

Publications

Publications iconWe publish a varied collection of periodicals that are timely, innovative and relevant, designed to meet the needs of members and others.

Service to members

We provide corporate and individual members with exclusive access to the UK's premier community on defence and security issues through an extensive range of events, publications and research, detailed above.

Commendations

I know what valuable work, in the cause of peace and security, the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies carries out in maintaining the essential links between the Armed Forces and those who make decisions under economic and political disciplines.”

Our Patron Elizabeth R.

HRH The Queen

The Royal United Services Institute has been an acknowledged leader in the debate on defence and security, been respected around the world for its contribution over nearly two centuries to that debate, and is now leading the debate about homeland security and global terrorism.”

Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP
The Prime Minister

Gordon Brown
As a facilitator of the exchange of ideas and information, and as an educator of the policy-maker of the present and future, the Institute is second to none.”

Rt Hon Tony Blair
Middle East envoy

Tony Blair
RUSI consistently proves its dynamism and adaptability by focusing much of its efforts on one of the 21st century's most severe challenges - countering terrorism. This menace impacts upon innocent victims across the globe. Thus the work of RUSI is invaluable both inside the UK and internationally."
